Timeless Charm – Handwoven Plain Lox Carpet

Understanding Stained Natural Lox Mohair

This rug is woven from a unique and character-rich variety of mohair known as Lox. Unlike the smooth, uniform fibers typically associated with mohair, Lox stands out for its naturally stained, uneven specks of dark hair found on the Angora goat. These darker strands occur organically and give the fiber a beautifully variegated texture and tone, resulting in a distinctive visual depth.

Lox mohair often retains plant materials—such as tiny twigs, seeds, and natural thorns—which become entangled in the fibers during the goat’s life on the veld. These natural inclusions are difficult to fully separate, and are intentionally spun into the yarn, preserving the authenticity and wild charm of the material.

The presence of these elements contributes to a highly textured, rustic finish that celebrates the raw beauty of nature. Rather than being a flaw, each embedded seed or thorn is a testament to the handmade, artisanal process, reflecting a respect for natural imperfection and a deep connection to the land and animal.

This mohair rug combines durability and warmth with a compelling visual narrative and tactile richness, making it a timeless heirloom that adds character and depth to any environment.
