As Beautiful As Nature Itself
Our story begins in 1967, when Jan Paul and Elsa Barnard founded a family business built on a shared love for natural fibres and craftsmanship. From producing mohair yarns to creating handwoven carpets, they laid the foundation for what would become a celebrated name in authentic, locally made design.
Their eldest daughter, Katrina Nel, joined the business in 2012. A fashion designer by trade and a farmer’s wife, Katrina lives and works from their farm in the mountains of the Eastern Cape, where her husband Anton farms Angora goats — the very source of the mohair used in their pieces.
In 2022, Elsa passed the business to Katrina, who now leads Elsa Barnard Mohair Carpets with the same dedication to quality, artistry, and heritage. Though Elsa has retired, she remains involved as a creative consultant.
In 2024, the family said farewell to their dad Jan Paul Barnard. His legacy continues through his daughters. His mohair blanket factory in Alicedale still produces beautiful pieces, ensuring the family tradition of fibre excellence lives on.
Today, the business operates under SundayChild Pty Ltd, proudly continuing the Barnard commitment to craftsmanship and local production.

Brand Story
SundayChild is more than a name, it’s a reflection of favour, grace, and elegance. Rooted in the Eastern Cape, SundayChild embodies a deep connection to land, heritage, and the enduring beauty of natural fibres.
Born from the vision of Katrina Nel, (née Barnard), a fashion designer by trade and a farmer’s wife by heart, SundayChild is nurtured on the very farm where her husband Anton raises Angora goats, the source of their exquisite mohair.
The Barnard family’s legacy is woven into every product, preserving the traditions of craftsmanship and the philosophy of Slow Design.

Our pieces honour quality, artistry, and tradition.
Inspired by Slow Food Movement
We work with natural fibres—mohair and wool—that are as resilient and radiant as the land they come from. Each piece tells a story of care, patience, and integrity, made not for fast fashion, but for a lasting connection to nature and home.
At SundayChild, we believe in the quiet luxury of handmade goods. Beautiful, authentic, and enduring, just like nature itself.
